Top 5 SEO Techniques
SEO is a moving target. The search engine algorithms are “secret” and are always changing, by design. Therefore, a good SEM is constantly observing the result of different SEO techniques to judge their efficacy. We deduce the cause by observing the effect.
There are many “white hat” SEO techniques (and we recommend only “white hat”) and new ones emerge occasionally – some of debatable effectiveness, e.g. bot herding – there are 5 top SEO techniques that should always be employed in good web design.
- Keywords
Identify 1 or 2 keywords to optimize on each page. Use long-tailed keywords, as these will be more specific to each client and have less competition.
- Title tag
Place target keywords in the title tag and make sure each page has a unique title tag. Duplicating title tags is detrimental to SEO. Place most important keywords to the left in title tag, and eliminate articles, prepositions and punctuation as much as possible, unless you really think people will be entering search terms with these. Limit the length of title tag: 60-70 characters, including spaces.
- Description tag
Similar to title tag, place target keywords here and use unique description meta tags. Limit the description meta tag content length to 150 characters, including spaces.
- Priority placement
Just as you want your keywords left-most prioritized in title tag and description meta tag, in your content you want keywords placed before less important text and graphics. Creative use of content headers and css helps greatly. Have a look at the web page source file. Where are the keywords in all this? Remember the bots see the page as code, not the pretty picture the browser shows you.
- Headers
Place keywords in <h1> and <h2> tags, and even <h3> <h4> and <h5> if you want to be really thorough. The most important keywords should be in <h1>, etc. And remember to style these tags with CSS anyway you like. Just because <h1> has highest priority does not mean it has to be the largest and boldest font on the screen. Creative use of CSS will allow your graphic designer and SEM to peacefully coexist on your web project.

Hello. I wished to inform you that some elements of your web site are difficult to scan for me, as I am color blind. I am a sufferrer of protanopia, however there are other forms of color blindness that will also experience difficulties. I can understand most of the website OK, and the parts I have problems with I can understand by using a adapted browser. Neverthless, it’d be cool if you would keep in mind us color-blind surfers while doing your next site re-working. Thanks.
Thank you for writing. I will give more attention to color contrast.
