Google Sidewiki As SEO Strategy

Yesterday Google launched Sidewiki, “… a browser sidebar that enables you to contribute and read helpful information alongside any web page.” Oh great, another social media venue. And how will Sidewiki impact SEO? Here are some initial thoughts.

The strategic hub of Sidewiki is your Google profile. If you write a compelling and useful Sidewiki entry on a website, it will attract readers to click on your profile and find out more about you. You will want to give some attention to creating/updating your Google profile to make sure that it reflects you and your business interests sufficiently. You can list your websites on your profile, and thereby, potentially drive more traffic to them.

Also, the share feature of Sidewiki supports readers sharing your entries on other social media such as Twitter and Facebook. So, write a really good entry and it could go viral, which would send more visitors to your profile and in turn to your websites – potentially.

So Sidewiki could be an indirect link building strategy which does support organic, white-hat SEO.
