Day 3

No rebellion, so far. Our daily commute to school is getting quicker as my son takes fewer rest stops (it’s only a mile) and falls off his bike less. I’m ready for cooler days. 103F when we rode home yesterday. 100% humidity this morning, but I’m thankful for the rain we got last night.

I’m already seeing surprising changes in my son after only 2 days of kindergarten. Yesterday afternoon at home he stopped in the hall and pointed out a bug – “Dad, a bug!” I know my duty. I’ve been well trained by wife and kids. Daddy must capture the bug and dispatch it. So I got a tissue, picked up the grasshopper and tossed it into the toilet. Hey, I don’t want to release live grasshoppers to range in my backyard. And, my son has never shown any mercy toward bugs – until now. A big frown came over his face and he looked like he was going to cry. “Don’t put it in there! He can’t find his friends and his family if you put him in there!” I thought I could explain my way clear to pulling the lever, but then I saw he was really upset. So I reached into the toilet bowl and extracted the hapless insect, now enveloped in wet tissue. I carried it outside to the back deck and my son was quick to instruct me to unwrap it, which I did and found the grasshopper alive and well.

Yeah, the first week of school has its Zen-like qualities.
