SEO with Google, Bing-Yahoo!

Today Microsoft and Yahoo! sealed a deal for a merger of search engine technology. I must say, I’m a Google fan and I don’t want to see Microsoft gain a large market share of the search engine market.

It brings back memories of the mid 90s when Microsoft broke into the web browser market which, at the time, was dominated by Netscape. As a web designer in the mid-90s, I was a big Netscape fan. Then Microsoft Internet Explorer started introducing proprietary markup and web design got more complicated. And Microsoft integrated IE in its operating system and it shipped on almost all PCs. Suddenly Netscape went out of business. I digress, but the gist is, Microsoft has a track record of muscling out the competition.

A major factor in the Microsoft-Yahoo! deal was Bing, the relaunch and much publicized version of Microsoft Live Search. Now, web designers and SEO professionals are very interested in how to optimize a website for Bing. I have found research that shows on-page optimization techniques are unchanged, e.g.: title tag containing keywords, keyword density, link density, etc.

Off-page optimization is also important – strategic link building. Really, this is no different SEO strategy for Bing as opposed to Google.

So currently, SEO has not been impacted by the advent of Bing. I will be keeping my eyes open, however, to stay alert for any SEO game changers Microsoft may cook up. I wouldn’t put it past them. But hey, there’s never a dull moment in SEO and web design.
